South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM Sri Lanka) is the first private education institute who offers Medicine degrees in Sri Lanka . SAITM is being monitored by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has been granted Degree awarding status by the Gazette EO NO.1721/19 of 2011 August 30 and EO 1829/36 of 2013 September 26,.The South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine is one of the most controversial education institute in Sri Lanka and this institute was established by Dr. Neville Fernando who is former Sri Lankan Politician and Businessman in addition to South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) Institute they open new private Teaching hospital called Dr. Nevil Fernando Teaching Hospital. SAITM Sri Lanka started their academic objectives form 2009 and There are huge protest for Sri Lanka Medical University students and other government medical students for this institute.

Dr. Neville Fernando Sri Lanka – Russia Friendship Teaching Hospital (NFTH) was ceremonially opened on 5th of April 2013 for the public and medical students of saitm medical faculty for clinical training.
