The Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS) is considered to be the most prestigious branch of the Sri Lankan civil service. It is accountable for managing the administrative affairs of the country and plays an important part in carrying out the policies and programs that have been established by the government. The officers of SLAS are involved in a wide variety of duties, some of which include the design of policy, its implementation, and the coordination of operations carried out by the government.

The Sri Lanka Examination Department is in charge of running the examination that potential SLAS officers must take in order to be considered for employment. The applicants who are ultimately chosen go through an intensive training program at the Sri Lanka Institute of Development management (SLIDA), which provides them with the information and abilities essential for efficient management. The SLAS is organized in a hierarchical fashion, with several grades or positions for each member. The Secretary to the Ministry, who is also the head of the relevant government ministry, holds the position of the highest-ranking officer in the service. Additional Secretaries, Deputy Secretaries, and Assistant Secretaries are just few of the positions that fall under the next level below that.

Officers of the SLAS are deputed to a variety of ministries, departments, and organizations within the government in order to manage and carry out the policies and programs of the government. They are responsible for a diverse array of responsibilities, including service delivery to residents, planning, and budgeting, public administration, and management of human resources. Officers in the SLAS have the opportunity to advance their careers by moving around between a variety of ministries and agencies during their service. Because of this practice, they are able to develop a wide range of experiences and knowledge in a variety of administrative sectors. Overall, the Sri Lanka Administrative Service plays a significant part in formulating and putting into action the policies of the government, promoting development, and ensuring that governance in Sri Lanka is carried out effectively.
